Introduction to Quilting with Anne Rankin Fall 2026

Interested in quilting? Plan to attend our one-day introductory quilting course, led

by an experienced member of our quilt guild, where you will learn essential

sewing basics and complete your very first block.

General Goal: Participants should walk away from this course with a basic understanding of cutting and

piecing of fabric that will act as building blocks in the creation of a quilt.

Materials required:

● a working machine that the participant knows how to use;

● 2 previously filled bobbins with neutral thread + the same thread for piecing (recommend 50wt);

● 6 – 9 fat quarters of fabric of the participant’s choosing; (additional fabric will be required to complete

quilt top);

● marking pencil/pen; pins; seam ripper; rotary cutter and mat.

Learning goals: The course will focus on:

how to read a pattern;

an introduction to choosing fabrics, including colours and patterns best suited to quilts/block sizes;

how to use a rotary cutter and sewing machine safely;

pressing for best results.

how to achieve an accurate 1⁄4” seam using the rail fence block;

4 patch block (including how to spin seams);

4 at a time flying geese block;

2 at a time 1⁄2 square triangles; as well as how to match points

trimming blocks to size
